My eight-year-old and I spent much of last Sunday at Somerville House school, in South Brisbane, where he was participating in the primary school chess championships.

It was fascinating watching children from five-year-olds up to Year 7s concentrating, strategising, and winning and losing graciously.

I don't play chess myself, but I still loved seeing so many kids pondering their next move. Not to mention the spectacle of hundreds of chess games being played simultaneously.

I climbed up into the 'grandstand' to get this bird's-eye view of the action.
