Imagine sitting on a deserted beach of soft white sand, with the sound of the waves and a few seagulls for company. As you gaze out to sea, you are rewarded with the unforgettable view of a mother humpback whale and her newborn calf playing in the waters right in front of you. Such wonders abound on the largely undeveloped mid north coast New South Wales and especially if you visit the Solitary Islands Marine Park.

If you enjoy whale watching, bird watching or wildlife watching in general, The is the perfect adventure for you. You can follow the entire sixty kilometer track in the footsteps of The Gumbaynggirr People, or you can experience small highlights along the route, such as Emerald Beach , Muttonbird Island or Red Rock .

Due to time restrictions, we were only able to visit several sections of the stunning Coastal Walk, however, taking four days to complete the entire walk (camping along the way) is certainly now at the top of my bucket list. The track itself stretches from Red Rock in the north - to Bonville Headland (Sawtell) in the south, and it is possible to camp or stay in small beachside towns, such as Woolgoolga or Emerald Beach along the way. A highlight for us was crossing "Look At Me Now Headland", where you can meet the mob of resident kangaroos and enjoy unspoilt views across to South Solitary Island and the Lighthouse.

Whale watching is an excellent way to beat the winter blues, as the gentle giants migrate to warmer waters between June and November every year, and anyone following The during this time will be guaranteed many spectacular sightings. This really is a magical part of the world and well worth stopping off to at least visit.
