Mother's Day is a fitting occasion to honour the '
Soldier's Queen' and her significant role in the lead up to, construction and the opening of
ANZAC Cottage in 1916. Her little-known story will be revealed on
Sunday,
May 13,
2018, in a talk at
1:45pm and repeated at
2:45pm.
The Cottage will be open on this day from
1:00pm to
4:00pm for visitors to browse at leisure and find out more about this memorial's fascinating history.
A week before ANZAC Cottage was to be built, the Soldier's Queen led the famous procession that travelled from the Perth Railway Station to the block upon which the Cottage was to be constructed.
The procession comprised of seventy drays laden with the materials and equipment necessary to build the Cottage led by her Model T Ford, also carrying a Metters stove and copper. Moreover, on that same day she began the digging of the first trench for the foundation stone, and on building day, February 12, 1916, she hoisted the ANZAC flag at 5:00pm.
On April 16, 1916, the Soldier's Queen was given the honour of handing ANZAC Cottage over to Private Porter. He and his family lived in the Cottage until his death in 1964, raising the Australian flag every dawn for 48 years.
The Friends of ANZAC Cottage invite you to hear how the Soldier's Queen came about, who she was, what she did and how this impacted on ANZAC Cottage and World War I in particular.
Entry is
free with afternoon tea available for a gold coin donation.
