Kindness. Simplicity. Balance. These three principles aren't spelt out anywhere, but step into Sol Natural Foods and you'll be enveloped in their warm embrace. Located in the beating heart of West End, Sol Natural Foods provides a vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu.
Flexitarians will also find something to suit amid the solid range of breakfast and lunch items. For example, if you absolutely must have meat to accompany your free range eggs on sourdough toast with house-made relish ($12), you can add a side of ham ($4). But, for the most part, everything here is made with the well-being of animals in mind; vegan sausages, scrambled tofu, haloumi and sauteed kale.
Lunch choices are just as ethical. For instance, the cheeseburger is comprised of a grilled beefless pattie with vegan cheese and all the trimmings. Other burger options give starring roles to jackfruit and falafels. Amid the tarts, pizzas, slices, cakes, muffins, pastries, sandwiches, salads, soups and smoothies, there is also a good selection of wheat-, gluten- and dairy-free products.
Sol Natural Foods has been around for quite some time - since 1999. It emerged as the offshoot of artisanal bakery Sol Breads, which was set up by a group of sourdough enthusiasts a couple of years earlier. Today, Sol Breads is well known in Brisbane and beyond for its naturally leavened, organic and nutritious loaves which you can purchase even if you're not eating in. Sol Organic Coffee has now also joined the range.
There's relaxed indoor seating galore, as well as a sunny courtyard which is shared with plant nursery All the Green Things. Make sure you leave sufficient time for a coffee as well as a browse - and savour the feeling of being lean, green and kind to the planet.
