I was out and about the other day and in need of a caffeine hit. As as I was not in my home suburb, I cruised passed a few coffee shops trying to decide which one to try. My eye was caught by a sandwich board with a big pink bow on top and a chocolate reindeer in the window.

My interest piqued, I ventured inside. I confess, I'm not much of a 'foodie', but my eyes consumed the pretty delights lined up in the glass counter top.

I was greeted by the owners, mother and daughter team, Raidayna and Michelle, self-taught bakers and decorators, who shared their passion with me. It runs in the family, apparently. They weren't too sure where and why the skill began, apart from a vague mention there was an aunt who was a professional wedding cake decorator; it just seems they've always been baking.

Inspired by some of the baking shows on television, Raidayna and Michelle opened their shop-front in May 2015. They love the creativity of every new and unique figurine or decorated dessert. Plus, they enjoy the fun and indulgence of serving High Teas on Sundays at 11am. Their Classic High Tea is $39 p.p. and includes 10 items per person and a beverage each, all individually hand-made. Bookings are essential on 9957 3527, or visit
soireecakes.com.au .

"Our cakes are made with the freshest ingredients and we can cater to any dietary requirements... there's nothing we can't do" says Raidayna. The pride and passion she feels for what she does shows in her face.

In this age of modern technology when many trades are dying out, it was a pleasant surprise to come across the beautiful skill of cake decorating in a store-front position; often you just see advertisements or have to go on-line. To be able to sit over a coffee and discuss ideas and be shown examples is so much more enjoyable. So the next time I have a special soiree coming up and need an eye-popping and creative masterpiece in the middle of my table to turn heads and make everyone's mouth water, then this is the place I'll go. In the meantime, I'll settle for a Belgian Hot Chocolate and cupcake please.
