Sydney's annual festival of Light, Music and Ideas, Vivid Sydney, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2018!
This year's stellar program is highlighted with all-new largescale projections and installations, fresh thinking across tech, design and culture, and a fabulous line-up of awesome Australian and international acts at iconic Sydney venues.
Held from Friday 25 May to Saturday 16 June 2018, Vivid Sydney is set to bring the City of Sydney to life with a beautiful light walk from The Rocks to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden, and awe-inspiring light art in Barangaroo and Darling Harbour, as well as Kings Cross, Chatswood and Taronga Zoo.
Get inspired by the creative atmosphere, but don't let the Vivid artists have all the fun - gain some artistic skills and let your imagination run wild with a fun workshop or two. Here are a few of our beginner-friendly favourites:
Vivid's beautiful light displays just beg to be captured on camera. Try a night photography course with Alfonso, who's earned the coveted TripAdvisor 2017 Certificate of Excellence, and who has over 20 years of experience in photography.
You'll stroll through the photogenic streets and alleys of The Rocks, as Alfonso coaches you to develop both your technical skills, as well as helping you to discover your personal photography style. Whether you've invested into a DSLR or whether you just want to get more out of your smartphone camera, Alfonso will show you Sydney and Vivid through another lens.
Vivid's displays in Chatswood are not to be missed, and while you're there, why not explore the local culture? Try some brush strokes with a master Japanese calligrapher, or perhaps practice the ancient Japanese art of Ikebana (flower arranging) or see how Japanese art can be applied to painting pretty pebbles.
Vivid involves a lot of walking, which is sure to build up an impressive appetite. Grab some friends and indulge in a dessert drawing class, where you'll capture the beauty of a cake, waffle or croissant with watercolour (and yes, you can have your painting and eat it too). Or if you're looking for something healthier and more exotic, try the Matcha class with renowned cook Yoshiko, where you'll learn how this premium green tea powder can be used for nutritious and tasty dishes, both savoury and sweet.
Vivid's distinctive displays may remind of macarons, with their bright and bold colours. Make a batch yourself with MakMak, who were recently crowned as having Sydney's best macarons. The class is beginner-friendly and runs regularly, so just jump in and enjoy!
If all the crowds at Vivid get you a bit worn out, there's no better meditative experience than to get closer to nature.
Enter some of Sydney's favourite florists, and take your pick from terrarium making, flower arranging, Kokedama (moss ball) making, and more. Take a moment to smell the roses, as you let your creativity thrive and grow. Choose from the season's freshest blooms and shrubs, and decide how you'll combine them to make a tasteful artwork. Take your creation away with you, and if you've got a terrarium or Kokedama, you can treasure them for years to come.
