As we all know, social media isn't without some potentially harmful risks - currently Neknominate is the latest lethal craze.

In the fast-paced world of social media, it's easy for parents and guardians to feel out of touch. But you don't have to be!

Helping parents to understand the many benefits of social media, as well as how to effectively manage the risks is 3103 Communications, a dynamic Perth based organisation, which specialises in online safety seminars for parents.

One particular highlight is the 'Introduction to Social Media Half-day seminar', which will be held on Saturday 22 March & Saturday 26 April from 9.00 am to 12.00 pm.

This 'super-size' seminar is led by facilitator, Kim Maslin, and aims to teach participants everything they need to know about social media and online safety in one convenient sitting:

This seminar is broken down into three parts:

1. Overview: The first part of the seminar introduces participants to the concept of social media and provides a summary of some of the most popular social media sites and apps, including Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, YouTube, AskFM, Instagram and Kik Messenger.

2. Privacy, Safety & Digital Reputation Risks: The second part of the seminar examines issues such as sexting, cyberbullying, location tracking, online shopping security risks and online predators. The goal of this part is to empower parents, by providing them with actual steps and measures they can take to reduce these risks.

3. Academic Implications: The final part of the seminar examines the impact social media use may be having on your child's education. This is a time to explore the great potential that social media presents for collaboration, communication, extended learning and building a positive online profile.

The content of this seminar is tailored to suit the interests and concerns of those attending and questions and discussions are encouraged as the seminar is set in a relaxed and informal environment with other parents and guardians who are just as concerned, curious or overwhelmed as you are!
