A heartwarming story from Sweden

18-year-old Joanna meets a beautiful, confident new classmate at school but the timing couldn't be worse. Joanna, who has ADHD and lives life constantly on the verge of sensory overload, has run out of her medication. Her father is overcome with depression since the death of her mother and struggles to pay the bills, so Joanna resorts to creative, and increasingly desperate, measures to come up with the money for her meds.

So Damn Easy Going is based on the novel of the same name by Swedish young adult author Jenny Jägerfeld. It's the debut feature film for director Christoffer Sandler.

It is refreshing to see a girl with ADHD represented on screen, when it was so long assumed to affect only, or mostly, boys. I'm sure some of Joanna's experiences, like the fidgeting, breaking her phone, and being unable to explain her own feelings, will be relatable to many people with ADHD. Joanna's sensory overload is cleverly depicted using interesting light and sound techniques.

But as Joanna herself says, "I don't like talking about it because it sounds like that's all there is to me" (or words to that effect). The movie is not about ADHD. Rather, it's a beautiful coming-of-age story which includes a sweet romance between two girls. Nikki Hanseblad as Joanna and Melina Benett Paukkonen as Audrey both give moving performances in their first feature film.

So Damn Easy Going is a charming, funny, Swedish drama. It will be screening at the Scandinavian Film Festival 2022 in July.
