Snowdrop – TV Series Review

Snowdrop is a unique Kdrama TV series that adapted from the handwritten notes of a man who escaped from a political prison camp in North Korea. This drama is twisted with a multifaceted story that involves romance, espionage, and a historic time in South Korean history. Starring Blackpink's Jisoo and a rising star Jung Hae In. These two names are well known in the South Korean entertainment industry with Jisoo and her K-pop group, Blackpink, regularly in the music charts.

Snowdrop is set in 1987 in South Korea, a pivotal year in the country's history when protestors faced an authoritarian government to hold democratic elections and later enforce constitutional reforms. You can see a lot of the 80s clothes with bright colours worn by actors and actresses in this drama.

The drama follows the complicated love story of Su-ho (Jung Hae In), a graduate student from a prestigious university (but later on reveal he is a North Korean spy), and Young-ro (Jisoo), a cheerful English literature student at Hosu Women's University. Their story becomes entangled with the mass protests during the tumultuous time in the nation's history after Su-ho gets involved in a violent street protest and Young-ro helps him hide from authorities.

Directed by Jo Hyun-tak, a lot of scenes take place in the dark with the dim light of Hosu Women's University. It creates suspense, anxiety and an uneasy feeling. Jo Hyun-tak also shoots at an unusual angle making the scenes more artistic.

Snowdrop became the subject of controversy due to accusations of historical negationism, even at the beginning of this drama, it stated that it is a fictional story and all the characters are fictional. But later on, JTBC (a South Korean nationwide pay television network) released their official statement on the controversy that said, "The drama is not distorting the pro-democracy movement nor is it glorifying the Agency for National Security Planning. It is a black comedy drama satirizing the political situation between the two Koreas under the authoritarian government in the 1980s."

Despite the controversy, this drama reached a high viewer rating. You can watch this Kdrama TV series for free on Youtube or other streaming platforms.
