Snow White – Ballet Preljocaj - Brisbane Festival


France's leading ballet company Ballet Preljocaj performed to a packed house at QPAC for the Brisbane Festival.

This was an entrancing production which stepped away from classical ballet into the realms of modern ballet combined with unique dance moves, acrobatics, inventive gestures, and even wall climbing.

The stage design with massive moving sets by Thierry Leproust and exotic and erotic costumes by Haute Couture designer Jean Paul Gautier added to the assault on the senses. Given that this is a well known child's fairy tale it takes a while to adapt to a staging which is altogether a different interpretation; nothing sweet and childlike here but rather the playing out of stark human emotions with sensual, dark and surreal human movement.

But the adjustment to this novel and superbly danced production leads to a tumultuous audience response. Get ready to jump to your feet for a standing ovation if you are fortunate enough to get tickets.
