Snow, Glass, Apples is a graphic novel adapted by illustrator Colleen Doran from the short story by Neil Gaiman (author of
The Sandman,
Neverwhere and
How To Talk to Girls At Parties ). It was first published in 2019 and won the Bram Stoker Award for Graphic Novel. The story is a dark take on the story of Snow White. The queen is a witch, but not an evil one. She is only trying to protect her kingdom from the princess and her frightening appetites.
I like fairy tales and vampire stories, so I enjoyed this dark re-imagining of the classic story. While this is a fairy tale, bear in mind that it is not for children. It contains violence, nudity and sex scenes.
The art is gorgeous, drawn in the decorative style of the Irish stained glass artist and illustrator, Harry Clarke, who both Doran and Gaiman admire. The back of the book includes sketches and notes on the drawing process from the artist which I found fascinating.
Snow, Glass, Apples is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that will appeal to fans of retold fairy tales. If you like this one, you might also enjoy
Jim Henson's Storyteller: Dragons , another graphic novel with beautiful art.
