Always wanted to go snorkelling but not sure where to start? Port Noarlunga Reef is the perfect place for beginners to make a splash and witness the captivating marine life that inhabits South Australian waters.

Just 34 kilometres South of Adelaide, Port Noarlunga proves to be one of the most popular and convenient diving and snorkelling locations. The water is shallow with easy access and the low tides expose a heritage listed reef that provides a natural marine reserve that allows safe aquatic exploration. Here you can float with schools fish, find sea stars and swim alongside the colourful reef.

The closest entry and exit point is the beach, however the shallow waters make the two jetty stairs the easier and preferred method of entry. All you do is walk to the end of the jetty, climb down the stairs and viola… hello reef.

At high tide you can climb over the reef, hang around with the birds and take in the views, or if you're daring, jump in on the other side.

The average depth of the dive site is approx. 5-7metres. Entering at the end of the Jetty it's about 6 metres deep. If you're entering from the first set of stairs, where it's about 3metres deep, be mindful of fishermen and their fishing lines.

Depending on the conditions, the water can either be super crystal clear or a little cloudy (for best results check the conditions before you go). Either way, you're sure to find sea creatures swimming around.

The most commonly found are the silver sweep, old wive, zebrafish and moonlighter. If you're really lucky, on the super RARE occasion you might even be able to spot a Dolphin or Southern Right Whale swimming close by.

The best way to get the fishes swimming right by your side, and I mean RIGHT by your side, like all up in your grill, is feeding them. Back on the shore there are stands where you can get fish food. In particular SNUBA sells fish food for a dollar.

If you'd prefer a bit more guidance there are plenty of accredited operators offering both diving and snorkelling tours. Don't have flippers or snorkels? Don't stress, you can also hire equipment from any of the operators.

SNUBA hires out snorkel sets for $10 per hour. This includes mask, snorkel and fins. They also hire out wetsuits, also $10 per hour.

After you've finished exploring the ocean, you're more than likely going to be feeling hungry (swimming takes it out of ya). Port Noarlunga Village offers great food and coffee spots that will definitely hit the spot.

So if you're looking for something fun and adventurous (and free!) to do this summer, I highly recommend snorkelling at Port Noarlunga. It's fun for all ages and a great way to see one of South Australia's most treasured natural beauties.
