There's a great selection of tastes to enjoy at Darwin's Waterfront precinct, including the fresh and flavoursome Vietnamese food at Chow. I recently discovered yet more fresh flavours at Snapper Rocks.

Although it's a relative newbie at the precinct, Snapper Rocks has already established a fine reputation and collected a swag of coveted awards. The cool interior is inviting on a steamy wet season day in Darwin. Overhead fans and a light, fresh colour scheme create a casual ambience.

There are booths, small tables or longer tables to choose from depending on how many friends you take along.

I chose a table inside, under a fan, for a lunchtime gathering. A table outside would be perfect on a cool evening. Either way, there is plenty to see with views of Stokes Hill Wharf and Darwin Harbour in the distance and plenty of foot and scooter traffic passing by.

Snapper Rocks boasts an impressive menu with seafood, meat and vegetarian options. I had heard, however, of a special lunch menu which is apparently both generous and affordable. The lunch menu currently has a choice of six dishes each priced between $16-$22.

I hold the belief that food tastes best when eaten in close proximity to where it is grown or caught and so, in keeping with this belief, I chose to eat crocodile. I have seen plenty of these creatures in Northern Territory waters so I figured there was a good chance I was eating local.

The salt and pepper crocodile meat was served with sriracha mayo and crunchy coleslaw on two fresh Bao Buns. The flavours were deliciously tangy and the serving was generous. In fact, I found I couldn't finish my second bun; a rare occurrence during the current trend of 'small plates'.

The lunch menu also features a beverage special. A glass of Prosecco, Rosé or Great Northern Super Crisp Lager can be ordered for just $5. I chose Rosé, the perfect accompaniment to salt and pepper crocodile.

There are plenty more beverage choices from the well-stocked bar and I found the staff helpful and friendly when I consulted with them regarding drinks. In fact, all staff members I encountered were delightfully helpful, patient in response to our indecision and forthcoming with good advice to help our lunch sail along in a pleasant manner. I plan to revisit one evening for oysters and a glass of something well chilled and possibly sparkling.

A further enticement to an evening visit is 'Tropical light', an exhibition by artist Bruce Munro, on display until April 30.
