Snapdragon is a magical realist graphic novel that was written and illustrated by Kat Leyh and published in 2020 by First Second books. Kat Leyh is a New York Times bestselling writer and artist based in Chicago. She is best known for her work as a cover artist for the series Lumberjanes and for her 2021 graphic novel Thirsty Mermaids.

Snapdragon was Leyh's debut solo young adult graphic novel. The book follows the story of a teenage girl called Snapdragon who doesn't fit in at school or have many friends. After her dog goes missing, she discovers him in the care of an old woman named Jacks, who has a reputation around town of being a witch. After getting her dog back from her, Snap begins hanging around with Jacks, and the two of them develop a friendship. As their friendship deepens, Snap realises that Jacks has a connection to her family past, and that the rumours about her being a witch might be true. Snapdragon is 240 pages long, features full-page colour illustrations, and is suitable for children between 10 and 14 years of age. It was listed in the top ten titles in the American Library Associations 2021 Great Graphic Novels for Teens list and was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2021 in the Best Publication for Kids category.

I really enjoyed Snapdragon. I'm a big fan of Kat Leyh. I think she is an excellent storyteller and artist. I love her use of colours, imagery, and her art style which reminds me a lot of Japanese anime. I found Snapdragon to be a wholesome, joyful coming-of-age story and queer romance, with a diverse cast of characters. I liked how she included a variety of ethnicities, sexualities and gender expressions in the book and how she used fantasy elements to tell a story about love and acceptance.
