Snakes** - For very many people, this word conjures up a horrific animal. So many people are afraid of snakes (myself included) that this is a real problem in Perth and surrounds. This year in Perth, there have been very many snake sightings both in the city and the country and there have also been people bitten by snakes.

Here in Perth, we have two very poisonous snakes and these are the Brown Snake and the Tiger Snake, both of which can be deadly.

I personally have had to deal with snakes when I lived in an area that had the two common deadly snakes in Mandurah. I would have loved to have had this workshop at the time, as I was breeding many animals. I was absolutely petrified of snakes and encountered several in my few years on the property!

To learn more about these sometimes deadly creatures, there will be a Reptile Awareness Workshop ** where you can learn about snake behaviour and snake bite first aid.

At this excellent workshop you will learn about the following, which could help with your fears and even help to save a life:

  • Snake behaviour
  • Types of snakes living in your local area
  • What attracts snakes to your garden
  • What to do if you find a snake in your home or garden
  • How to avoid snakes in natural areas
  • Snake bite first aid

  • You are requested to wear closed in shoes and light refreshments will be provided.

As the temperature increases around Perth and WA, our native snake species become more active. They come out to bask in the sun, find food and find a mate. People and snakes can live side by side if they are careful and take precautions to reduce the possibility of encountering a snake. You can avoid snakes by keeping on paths, trails and walkways. If you happen to see a snake, remain calm, leave the snake alone, and slowly back away from it.

    Protect your Pets
You need to be a responsible pet owner and protect your pet by exercising it on a short leash when walking in natural areas and keep your cats indoors. Do not let your dog run off lead in the bush and/or near water.

Should you happen to find a snake in your garden or home, you can contact the Wildcare Hotline on 08 9474 9055. This a 24/7 volunteer service which will provide you with advice on what to do. If necessary, they will put you in contact with a volunteer reptile remover or a licensed pest controller.

However, they ask that you DO NOT approach or aggravate a snake in any way. Make sure your pets are safe and cannot get near the snake.

This workshop will be held on Saturday, 24th November 2018, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm. The venue is The Wetlands Centre Cockburn, 184 Hope Road, Bibra Lake.

Cost of this workshop is just $5, and it is run by the City of Cockburn. You can make your bookings here, and you can find out more at their website, or phone them on 08 9411 3444.

As snakes are being found in suburban backyards nowadays, this is a very important workshop and one that will be well worth attending in case you ever come across a snake.
