3 Sensational Smoothie Recipes

I'm not a big breakfast eater but I appreciate the value of a good start to the day, so as soon as Spring hits I ditch the Winter porridge and get back on the breakfast smoothie train. Here are three of my favourites - they are all vegan and the first two use a combination of nuts and water in place of milk, but feel free to substitute milk if you prefer.
Bananaberry
1 banana
1 cup strawberries
1 fresh date (use 2 if you have a sweeter tooth)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon of allspice
A handful of almonds soaked overnight
1 cup water
Instructions: simply wash strawberries, cut stems off and throw everything into the blender (be sure to de-seed the dates, rinse the almonds and discard the water they were soaking in)
Optional extras:
Ground raw cacao if you're okay with small amounts of caffeine
A teaspoon each of flaxseed and hemp oil (this is a great way to get essential fatty acids into your diet if you're not getting them elsewhere)
Honey as a sweetener if you don't like dates
Blueberry Bliss
1 punnet blueberries
1 handful of cashews soaked overnight
1 fresh date (use 2 for a sweeter tooth)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon of allspice
1 cup water
Instructions: simply throw everything into the blender (be sure to wash your berries, de-seed the dates, rinse the cashews and discard the water they were soaking in)
Optional extras:
A dash of vanilla or some vanilla bean seeds goes well
A teaspoon each of flaxseed and hemp oil
Peanut Butter Banana
1 banana
2 tablespoons peanut butter of your choice (I like crunchy)
1 cup water
Instructions: simply throw everything into the blender
This one is my favourite but it does make less so if you have a big appetite double the recipe.
I find these smoothies are a great start to the day, they're not too heavy and they're simple and nutritious. Come summer, you may like to add some ice to the blender if you prefer cold drinks.
Enjoy!
