Poutine is a hearty snack food passed on to us from rural Quebec, Canada from back in the 1950s. Poutine is french fries, doused with gravy, and sprinkled with cheese curds. This sounds messy but can be divine when you're craving something really shmengy, as they say, that will fill a bottomless pit of a stomach.

Mr. "Smoke" developed the concept of not just serving poutine, but poutine with a kick. He started a unique franchise that specializes in just poutine with every topping imaginable. Because it's quite a heavy snack food, the after hours party group really love Smoke's poutines as this really helps mop up some of that alcohol!

Here's a link to the rie menu to get an idea of what's on offer:

MENU

The basic poutine is french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. The basic variations are the meats; pork, chicken, beef, or steak. There is also a vegetarian version.

The next layer is the sides. These include bacon, mushrooms, peas, caramelized onions, chili, cheese sauce, salsa, jalapeno peppers, sour cream, etc.

At one time they had a macaroni and cheese version, but they discontinued that.

This is my favourite version. It's called Country Style Poutine and comes with chicken, bacon, mushrooms, green peas, and onions (though I ask them to take the onions off as I'm not keen on them).

You can mix and match any items on the menu, though it will cost a bit more if you're ordering beyond a particular poutine. There are now over 30 core menu items to mix and match.

rie has an Eating Tour happening across Canada From July 13 to August 6, 2015. Smoke's currently has 44 locations across Canada.

I was told they've recently opened a location in California, with expectations to expand into the US market. I can only imagine it will catch on like wildfire there!

The backbone to Smoke's success is that they use quality ingredients with a liberal hand; yellow flesh potato french fries, Quebec cheese curds, vegetarian/meat/peppercorn gravies, and nice big chunks of chicken, beef or pork.

If you're just a bit peckish, the snack size costs $4.99 Cdn. The meal size poutine costs $6.99 Cdn, and this is truly a meal with respect to how it will fill you. If you're really hungry, you can WOW size it for a total of $11.00.

You will recognize the distinctive red tartan design of Smoke's logo colour, which is repeated on the take-out box. All locations have a small indoor seating section, and they offer regular soft drinks as well. The Hess Village location also offers WiFi.

One will not get skinny eating Smoke's poutine, but it's a great snack meal that fills the craving!
