Take a trip to Sassafras and walk through one of the friendliest and quirkiest stores you will ever find at Smits & Bitss.



If you're anything like me, you want to escape the city once in a while to some tranquil beautiful retreat, filled with intricate curios and fun things to look at.

I like to head up towards the Yarra Valley ranges and the hillside villages of Olinda and Sassafras.

Once in Sassafras, one of my favourite stores to visit on almost every adventure we take there is Smits & Bits Gifts and Homewares.

It is a fun little place to visit, where you can feel like you have stepped back in time.



As you arrive, you will begin in an old-fashioned cobble stone courtyard. You enter underneath the arches and into the tranquil garden area.

Sometimes they will be musicians playing. In winter, they have a big pot filled with fire outside, where the children (and adults) can roast a marshmallows for free.

There is an old-fashioned dolls house on display with rooms filled with treasures to delight and to look at.



There are funny face wooden frames where you can put your face through and take a picture of your self looking like an old-fashioned person.

Entering into the store itself, you will find a wide range of of curios and housewares at very reasonable prices.

It seems every time we come here, we find some curious little trinket that we just have to take home with us.

The last time I was here, they had these amazingly huge metal giraffes that you could place in your garden, where I am certain they would look really very beautiful.

Inside the store is a range of lovely natural soaps and some beautiful cups glasses and crystal ware.

Forget the over inflated antique shop prices, here your prices will be incredibly reasonable.

If you are a music buff and always in search of unusual LPs, outside there is a great selection of antique books and records for you to browse through.

But the one true treasure of Smits & Bits has to be the owner, Connor Dais. This gentleman is one of the true treasures of humanity. Every single time we have visited, he has always had a kind words to say to my children. He has delighted them by giving them free gifts over the years and I do not believe it is because he knows who they are, it seems that he is just a generous lovely soul.

He dedicates his heart to this business and he really loves all of the items which he stocks. He explained to me on one visit that he does not overprice his stock, he just needs to cover his costs and add on a little bit to give him a successful business.

Judging by the busyness of this location and the smiles on people's faces, he has certainly succeeded in creating a successful business and not just a successful business, but a joyful location where people come to spend their free time and while away warm or cold afternoons.
