Sunnybank Theatre, celebrating 50 years of amateur theatre, are presenting their "best of" season."Sleuth" was a great choice.

Antony Shaffer has an amazing list of credits – but "Death on the Nile", and "Murder on the Orient Express" is enough to show the league he is in.

Paul Marshall and Chris O Leary in the two-handed "Sleuth" have been challenged to present one of the most convoluted and engaging plots I've had the pleasure of being baffled by, and to tread in the footsteps of Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, who starred in the movie.

Chris is absolutely convincing as the intelligent, arrogant writer of mysteries, totally convinced of his power to weave a convincing and chilling scenario in real life, as a response to meeting his wife's lover, whom, he is convinced, he can bamboozle, and humiliate.

Paul is no less convincing as the apparently naïve and idealistic lover, who, as the play develops, shows a side of his character and of his intellect, that neither we nor Chris have suspected.

Right up to the last knock on the door the plot twists and turns, reaching a chilling and unexpected denoument. The audience chuckled, and gasped at the elegantly crafted lines (beautifully delivered) and the unexpected gyrations of the plot.

Were there any disappointments?

Only that the theatre wasn't quite full. It deserved to be.
