Immerse yourself in the history and mystery of Ballarat by spending a night in one of its oldest and creepiest buildings. The gothic-style mansion, built in 1877 to house the first bishop of Ballarat, now serves as an upmarket bed and breakfast. The feeling is that there's still an odd bishop or two floating around.
Prepare to be awestruck as you arrive at the grand entrance gates, which open to a winding driveway that leads through the formally landscaped gardens and onto the house. The grandeur of the entrance sets the tone for your paranormal adventure.
The rooms are stunning, fit for a king and queen, never mind a bishop. For your fright night, equipment is added to test the ghost theory, as rooms are equipped with paranormal ghost-hunting equipment.
Step into the world of modern ghostbusting with state-of-the-art equipment. No more fingers-on-a-glass Ouija games-we're talking REM PODs that react to changes in the electromagnetic field, creating an eerie yet fascinating atmosphere during investigations.
Other ghost-hunting equipment includes an Ovilus, a device for communicating with ghosts. The theory is that spirits can manipulate the EMF around the device to select words from its built-in word database. Also included are K11 Meters, which are like spirit box radio sweeps with temperature sensors.
There will be a Static Detector - Have you ever wondered if a spirit watches over you in your sleep? Find out!!
It's just as well you won't be alone. On this fright night, you will need to share a room and bed with a friend, and no doubt, you will be hoping there are never three in the bed.
Before the adventure starts, you are provisioned for the night with a late-night supper, coffee (not that you will need it to stay awake), and pastries for breakfast.
Check-in is at 4 pm, so you can explore nearby Ballarat before you start. The famous Lake Wendouree is a one-minute stroll, or you could visit Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Stockade attractions, the Arch of Victory, the Botanical Gardens, and lunch at one of the fabulous restaurants/cafes nearby.
Check-out is at 11 am so that you may get a few hours of shut-eye.
This event involves approximately 13 people, all of whom must be over 18. It is highly active and creepy and not for the faint-hearted!
The event is organised through
Kyneton Paranormal.
Cost: $230. VARIOUS DATES SEE LINK BELOW
Sleep with the Bishops Paranormal Sleepover Bookings
The Bishops Palace also has bookable accommodation. It is a privately owned home among acres of impressive heritage-listed gardens. You can stroll around the historic gardens or find a nook to sit in and enjoy a good book or a glass of wine.
Melbourne architect Joseph Reed of Reed and Barnes designed the Bishop's Palace. Reed was the same architect who helped design several seminal buildings around Melbourne, including the Royal Exhibition Building and Ripponlea.
The original heritage-listed gold lead stencilled paintwork, seen in the front entry and on the staircase walls at Bishops Palace, was replicated in the Royal Exhibition Building. Other original features include lead-stencilled paintwork, cornices, ceiling roses, and fixtures and fittings.
The ground floor has a library/billiards room, large dining room, parlour, kitchen and laundry.
A magnificent staircase leads to the additional four suites on the first floor.
The venue would be ideal for couples who can book individual rooms. Alternatively, groups can book the whole mansion for weddings or company retreats, as there is accommodation for up to 12 guests. A spa pavilion in the rear gardens features an eight-person deluxe spa bath, sauna, and an adjoining BBQ area.
