The inaugural Festival of Slavic Culture "Slav Fest – 2017" took place during August and September in 2017 and involved eight Slavic communities of Queensland: Belarus, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czechoslovakian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, and Ukrainian. The festival was hugely successful as the program included the Slav Fest exhibition at the Brisbane Square Library for four weeks, library presentations, cooking demonstrations, community events and the gala concert at the auditorium of the Cannon Hill Anglican College.

The Festival of Slavic Culture is conducted on a biennial basis and it's back for its second glorious outing. This year's program of the Slav Fest includes the gala concert again, exhibitions at libraries, musical concerts and the Slavic communities will stage individual events at various ethnic clubs and venues across Brisbane. Library Exhibitions
A FREE, beautiful visual exhibition of artefacts from eight Slavic cultures will be on display throughout August and September in a couple of Brisbane City Council Libraries:

Russian Concert
A Concert of the Russian Romance and ecclesiastical art will be held on Saturday 31 August at 12.00 noon at the church hall of the St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral at 334 Vulture Street, Woolloongabba. FREE entry (but donations are always welcome). St Nicholas Cathedral was designated a World Heritage Site in 1992. The performers participating in the concert are the Combined Russian Orthodox Church choir, vocalists L Brooker, L Kelloway, Innessa, A Ekzarkho, and Y Dorohoff, and a combined instrumentalist group.

Serbian Festival"Vasar", the Brisbane Serbian Festival , is celebrating it's 10th anniversary and has FREE entry. It showcases Serbian culture and traditions such as music, dancing, rides, activities for the kids, delish food trucks (think Serbian sausages, doughnuts and crepes) and of course beer. It is on Sunday 1 September with kick-off at 11.00 am and is being held again at the Dutton Park School oval, 112 Annerley Road, Dutton Park.

Slavic Markets
Discover the culture of the Slavs at the Slavic Markets in Brisbane held on the first Sunday of every month. The next one coincides with Slav Fest, so it is sure to be special. It will be on Sunday 1 September from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. The venue is 140 Main Street in Kangaroo Point and the entry cost is only is $2.00.

Polish Festival
The Polish Spring Festival "Wiosna" will be held on Sunday 8 September from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm at the Polish Ex-servicemen's Club at 46 Holland Crescent in Capalaba.

Gala Concert
A Gala Concert, with a change of venue to accommodate the increased interest, will be held in the Amphitheatre of Roma Street Parkland. It will feature Brisbane's best folk and classical art performers of the various Slavic communities. It takes place on Saturday 21 September at 12:00 noon until 3.00 pm. Traditional food from the various Slavic cuisines, as well as craft and souvenir stalls, will be sold at the venue. I recommend that you leave the car at home and catch public transport on the day. It is easy to get to as there are frequent trains and buses to Roma Street Transit Centre from most suburbs.

Please note that the Polish/Russian evening organised by the association of Queensland "Polonia" which was to have been held in August at the Polish Club at 10 Marie Street Milton has been postponed until further notice.

History of the Slav Fest
In 2016, ten of Brisbane's Slavic communities committed to creating the inaugural Festival of Slavic Culture, planned for August and September 2017. Their mission was to inspire recognition of each Slavic community's history as well as the contributions made by people and organisations of Slavic origin to multi-cultural Australia. The goal of the festival is to introduce the general Australian public to Slavic culture by demonstrating the rich and vibrant Slavic culture through a Gala Concert, and a series of exhibitions and tastings of Slavic cuisines. It also provides education and awareness of the contributions of the Slavs.
