It was a hot summer's day and the beach was swelling, there bodies all over the sand. I listened to the Dj and sank back into the concrete steps. Beach bag with towels, hat and sunscreen at the ready, bottles of water for hydration and teams of people dressed in costumes and large inflatable volleyball court barriers framed twelve competition courts. Big brands like Bonds, CLEO, Schick, Rockstar, H2Coco printed on each. Scarborough Beach amphitheatre was turned into a SLAM Festival delight!

I took my two rugrats for a day at the beach and they helped me suss out the festival. As we arrived at Scarborough Beach Ampitheartre car park it was getting pretty full and it was an hour before the competition started. We got out of my car to the deafening sound of the shark siren wailing for swimmers to get out of the water as there had been a shark sighting. As for being a south of the river girl, I or my rugrats had no idea what was going on, but miss 9 saw surf life savers ushering people at of the water and made the correct assumption.

Looking towards the amphitheatre steps there were tents and fences lining the left hand side for the Corona Beach Bar and tents of sponsoring brands lining the right hand side. Down the bottom of the steps was the Registration Desk where teams signed in and collected their Sponsor Bag full of free goodies. There was a DJ to the right pumping out dance tunes to get the party started. And laid out on the sand looking towards the ocean were the Beach Volleyball Courts. Asking one of the staff members at registration desk for the person in charge of this event, I was directed to Maggie, the Communication Manager. After introducing myself, Maggie gave me a quick run down on what SLAM is about with the where, what, why, who and how of the event. She was a very busy lady and sometimes hard to track down throughout the day.

Once settled and ready, the rugrats and I set off to find out what the sponsors tents were offering. CLEO had inflatable beach balls and current magazine, Schick had sailoresses handing out razors, Rockstar had paper, scissors, rockstar challenge wheel comp to win a Rockstar cap, Rockstar Shirt, Rockstar Drink or Rockstar Surfboard! Bonds had a giant game of twister and comfy beanbags or beach chairs to relax in, H2Coco had tasters and Coconut Toss to win a month's supply of H2Coco drinks. After collecting some goodies and having some fun, the amphitheatre was starting to fill as the games were starting at 10am. Teams of four or six people were arriving and signing in. The vibe grew exciting. The game was on!

This year 126 teams entered into the Beach Volleyball SLAM Festival. The event is social as well as competitive divisions. Out of the Sponsors Goodies Bag teams wore the official BONDS SLAM tank top or kept their team costume on. There were giant cheques, trophies and money handed out for the winners of the following sections.

Corona Cup - Botanical Purple Cobras
Competitive 4s Cup Winners - Sand Volley
Social 6s Cup Winners - Super Jets
Social 6s Plate Winners - Hey How Are Ya?
