Up in the sky, is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Superman? Nope, it's Skywhale and Skywhalepapa - two hot air balloon sculptures by artist Patricia Piccinini whom you can see in the image above, standing inside Skywhalepapa; the papa being the new companion piece to Skywhale. Together they form a Skywhale family. They're going on tour, which will see them fly across the skies of Australia as a National Gallery Touring Event through 2021-2022 as follows. There's more information to be found on the website.

02 Oct 2021 - Walkway Gallery, Bordertown, SA
23 Oct 2021 - Araluen Art Centre, Alice Springs, NT
11 Dec 2021 - MPavilion, Melbourne, VIC
14 May 2022 - Hamilton Gallery, Hamilton,
09 Jul 2022 - Art Gallery of Ballarat, Ballarat, VIC

"Every heart sings is a project that talks about nature, family, evolution, care and wonder. They float into our lives to make us smile and think." Patricia Piccinini. Centred around the two balloons, the Skywhales: Every heart sings project spans music and song to knitting and baking. You'll find Piccinini's new children's book Every Heart Sings HERE, which you can purchase. Musician Jess Green (AKA Pheno) has created a song, We are the Skywhales, which you can listen to HERE, and learn the full lyrics.

For the kids who'd love to colour their own Skywhales, they can download printable colouring sheets featuring illustrations from Every Heart Sings. SEE HERE for the Every Heart Sings sheet, and HERE for the Skywhales Over Canberra printable colouring sheet.

Keen knitters can also get involved in this joyful occasion and make their own Skywhales from a pattern developed by a local Canberra knitter Katy Griffis, in collaboration with Piccinini. Katy developed THE PATTERN, complete with details of knitting techniques, stitches and abbreviations, to create a 35cm Skywhale stuffed toy. Share your creations using the hashtag #Skywhales!
