You can't visit Freo without taking a ride on the Skyview Observation Wheel with your partner, friends or kids. As there are no tall buildings in the town, the Ferris Wheel is the only option for a bird's eye view of the surrounds.
Opened in October 2011, it was transferred from the Royal Show in Claremont to the Esplanade, just across the railway line from the Little Creatures Brewery and minutes from the harbour with seafood eateries like Kailis' and Cicerello's. It carries 36 air conditioned gondolas that accommodates 6 people per carriage, taking passengers 15 stories into the air. At 46 metres it is the highest Ferris wheel in the Southern hemisphere exceeding the Skywheel I saw on the Gold Coast.
For $12, I was off to 10 minutes of tame floor-swaying rotations that offered the highlight of the ride - the spectacular day views. I saw the rooftops of Freo, the Fishing Boat Harbour, Esplanade Park, Fremantle town, Arthur Head, Rottnest Island and the Indian Ocean.
