Every time I have driven past this place on the Gold Coast highway, I always remember that I want to go there and try it. I guess that's the issue, usually I am in the car and on route elsewhere, but since discovering that it was voted winner of the Top 10 Gold Coast Coffee Joints by Gold Coast Bulletin readers , I made a special trip to see what all the fuss was about.

Located on the Gold Coast Highway in Mermaid Beach, heading south, it is just past Pacific Fair, and immediately after Peerless Avenue on your left. It is also just minutes to walk to from Broadbeach, but if heading there by car, they have street parking just outside, and on the side roads. The signage isn't obvious - I have driven past a few times and sometimes I see it and others times I lose it.

Inside it was much more understated than I had imagined, with the name conjuring up rock murals, skulls and loud music. In fact, it had simple decor - a beautiful wall mural of a woman, small wooden tables and chairs and some tasteful skull lamps and ornaments.

So to the coffee, were Gold Coast Bulletin readers right? Yes. The coffee here, mocha being my caffeine fix of choice was spot on, very creamy and the perfect balance of chocolate and coffee. Plus what I liked was I had a medium size, which would have been a large in other places, so you get value for money too. Now usually when I have a mocha I tend to leave the last little bit, not sure why, but this time I drank it to the dregs at the end, it was that nice. This is clearly why they won the title of best coffee joint, as apart from the intriguing name, there are no gimmicks or wild decor here, just great coffee.

I get the feeling that once you find this place, you tend to go back time and again. I certainly noticed in the time I was there, that pretty much everyone that came in was known by name and order, with friendly exchanges being had.

The service was friendly and welcoming, and everyone seemed to be working hard either making coffee or on bagel duty.

They have a special bagel menu which I thought was cool and different - not something I have seen anywhere else on the Coast. Your choice from a variety of bagels and you choose your toppings - they have pretty much every sweet and savoury topping you would want. I had one with jam - not very interesting but I just wanted something small. In total my medium (although quite big) mocha and the bagel came to $10 exactly, which wasn't bad. My bagel was lovely and presented well, I am certainly wanting to try something a little more adventurous next time I visit. They also have cakes and snacks available that are prepared fresh each day.

They have seating indoors and some high bar-type tables outside, my preference would be to sit inside, as although it is great to be outside, you are next to a busy road, so not overly relaxing, if that is what you are there for.

They had a few cool statement skull items, I really like the skull vase with flowers on top of the books. I guess they could have gone overboard on the skull stuff but it isn't like that at all.

After reading up on them for this review, I discovered they are all about sustainability, which I like. They source all ingredients locally and minimise waste by using biodegradable cups and containers and donating used coffee grind to the local community gardens. Coffee with a conscience.

They are open Monday to Saturday 6am - 3pm and on Sundays 7am - 2pm.

Certainly worth a visit - they have been voted the best coffee joint on the Coast, so if you love coffee, then go and decide for yourself if it lives up to the award.
