Skulduggery Pleasant: The End Of The World - Book Review

Published March 20th 2012
The new book in the Skulduggery Pleasant series hit commercial shelves on the 24th of February. This book is short, sweet and fun, and at only $5, it's perfect to cuddle up with on one of these numerous rainy day's we've been having.

This book is a novella, so when I called it short, I wasn't joking. The whole thing is only being 126 pages, so it's not going to keep you entertained for hours. You do get a fair bit for your $5 though, two stories are contained within.

One: In which a boy named Ryan tries to stop a ruthless gang from destroying the world with the Help of Detective Pleasant, a living skeleton and his partner Valkyrie Cain, a young schoolgirl. The other is about the character created by the winner of the 'create your own character' contest and features Hayley Skirmish and Tane Aiavao, an Australian and New Zealand sorcerer respectively. We meet them both helping our titular characters fight off a horde of zombies in a Brisbane grave yard.

Both these stories give a good look at what some of our hero's smaller cases look like between saving the world. Overall for any fan of the series, it is worth picking up. For those slightly less in the know, you may be a little confused, but it'll give you a good idea of the style of writing and the quite witty humour that seemed to get a lot of people into the books.

Your Comment
I wouldn't recommend anyone new to the series start with this one. That's exactly what I did and at first I thought the novella was awful and I couldn't understand why the series was getting so much acclaim. Now that I've read the other books I get it, but this one definitely isn't his best.
