Looking for a fantastic fun way to start your weekend? Then rock on over to the Morley Rollerdrome.

Every Saturday morning there is a lesson at 9am before fun and games start at 10am. With glitter balls in my eyes, skates packed and ready, I headed there bright and early with my little skatlings aged seven and four. We had brought our own skates but decided to hire a pair for my four year old as, unlike her own boots, the skates could be adapted to be a little slower and help build her confidence. At just $2 a hire, it was a bargain. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We were also able to borrow arm supports for free.

We had a few warm up skates around the rink before the lesson began. Rather amusingly the music to Mission Impossible was played as we found our feet. We then had to stand at the side of the rink while a skating guru got us all to limber up. There was something reminiscent of Patrick Swayze about him, firm but fun - I felt like I was on the set of Fame. We stretched our necks, our arms and then sat down to do our legs by rolling our skates to our knees and back again. My kind of aerobics.

We were then split into groups of beginners, intermediates and advanced. In the beginners group there were around 20 people, most of them children. The leader was friendly and guiding. We soon leant the starting 't' position and the glide movement. My son took to it like a duck to water. My daughter enjoyed herself but found the lesson was a bit much for her little legs so had a few rests. It was a good opportunity get a drink from the cafe and watch in awe at the more advanced skaters twisting around on one leg, making it all seem quite effortless.

Once the lessons were finished the glitter balls were lowered and the glam began. The rink was busy though by no means packed and there was plenty of free space with funky disco lights dancing around us. There were some party games, one being the chance to push a friend or child around in a toboggan, best described as a baby bath on wheels. The kids had a ball and there was a lovely friendly atmosphere.

By 11 o'clock I was exhausted so we packed up and rolled off into the sun. I will wait until my daughter is older before she attempts the lesson session again, however my son and I can't wait to get our skates on.
