Believe it or not, skating (whether on rollerblades, quads or ice skates) is a great way to keep fit and loose weight. One hour of skating can burn up to 500 calories - hard to believe that something so fun can be good for you!

So get your skates on and head to one of these Brisbane skating rinks.

Ice Skating

Queenslanders rarely get to partake in winter sports, so there's something uniquely appealing about ice skating – perhaps because it's the only chance we get to wear gloves and beanies! Iceworld has two locations, Acacia Ridge (1179 Beaudesert Road) and Boondall (2304 Sandgate Road). If you've never skated before you can enrol in the rink's skating school, which costs $70.00 for the first lesson and $50.00 for each additional lesson. If you already know how, then skip the lesson and get right into the skate sessions (prices here) – just stick close to the sides if you're a first timer!

Freezing ice and warm beverages go together like peas and carrots, so the Iceworld Coffee Club makes a lot of sense. For only $10.00, you can enjoy an hour and a half skate plus a hot chocolate, tea, coffee of cappuccino.

Iceworld also offers figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey and curling lessons.

Roller Skating

For general skating sessions (plus fun games and activities), Digi Roller Skating Rink (40-44 Johnson Road, Hillcrest) and Stafford Skate Centre (280 Stafford Road) provide a rink and a DJ. Prices differ depending on the length and time of the session; see the website for more information.

Skateaway Bundamba (21 Agnes Street) hosts learn to skate classes, school holiday and vacation care programs, birthday parties, fundraising parties, artistic skating and inline hockey, in addition to the general skating sessions. Prices range between $7.00 and $10.00, depending on the activity, and shoe hire is an extra $4.00.

Get outdoors with Planet Inline Skate School, where the motto is 'if you can walk, we can teach you to skate.' Planet Inline offers individual and group lessons, training programs, kids holiday programs and skate maintenance for beginners. Once you've mastered the basics, you can join one of the social skating sessions. Skate your way around Brisbane on a Sunday, enjoy an easy-going Saturday morning session followed by breakfast or take an exhilerating trip of the Goodwill Bridge on Wednesday night (only for the skilled!)

Skating is one of those rare activities that brings everyone together - to laugh at you when you fall on your butt!
