In my imagination, I floated onto the ice with glacial composure, and performed a perfect upright spin. In reality, I veered wildly into a hand-holding couple, landed on my butt and was dragged (backwards, by the hood of my jacket) to the edge of the rink by my two mortified teenagers.

Despite my utter lack of grace and skill, we've all since ventured back onto the ice. And while I'm fairly sure a career in figure skating does not lie in my stars, I've now spent long stretches of time on my feet. Without wobbling. Or even clutching the sides.

The good news for Canberra residents keen to indulge in the simple but magical pleasures of gliding on ice is the return of Skate in the City this winter. Now in its fifth consecutive year, Skate in the City 2015 will feature the capital's only open air ice rink in Garema Place as part of a dazzling month-long winter celebration. Also on offer will be activities for the whole family, including cultural events, competitions, professional performances, DJ dance parties, dress up nights, and a snow box for younger children.

Visitors can select from 60-minute sessions (which include a professional show by experienced skaters) and 45-minute general skate sessions. There will be seven sessions daily, with an extra session on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. If you have young children or, like me, are a little unsteady on your blades, Penguins (skate aids) can be hired for a mere $8 and provide welcome additional support.

This month long event will once again feature events for the whole family including cultural days, dress up nights and a snow box for kids. For more information or to book visit Skate in the City 2015 .
