Members of my generation will remember the early 80's, when roller-skating was the epitome of cool, not to mention the fun alternative to a walk in the park – why walk when you could roll? And the movie Xanadu was single-handedly responsible for taking disco to the next level. Those were the days. The good old days and you can relive the fun – or introduce your kids – to skating at the family friendly Sk8House in Carrum Downs. Everyone from tiny tots to adults are welcome with classes designed to suit beginners right through to speed skaters.
It was wonderful to see so many adults re-finding their wheel-clad feet at Sk8House recently. Skating is tons of fun and the moment I saw everyone whizzing about, I was itching to lace up a pair of boots myself. Despite fears I would end up flat on my backside, one of the co-owners, Mark Hodges encouraged me to give it a go, even pointing me in the direction of their Adult classes held every Monday night from 7pm to 8pm for a refresher course.
Kids new to skating can participate in a Learn to Skate classes, which are available every Saturday morning from 10am to 11am, followed by the general skating session from 11am to 1pm. If Saturdays are no good, then Learn to Skate classes are held again on a Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm, AFTER the 4pm to 6pm skating session, which is also included in the lesson fee. The class and sessions are all inclusive for $12 with an extra $2 for skate hire.
Sk8House offers a session exclusively for Tots (pre-school aged children) every Wednesday morning from 9am to 11am for only $7. Carers are encouraged to order a coffee, sit back and enjoy a catch-up with friends while the kids are fully entertained out on the rink. They play games, participate in sing-alongs and even try some roller dancing. Sk8house staff are on hand the entire time to help the kids, offering assistance and how to skate tips as well as plenty of fun.
Sk8House is open right through the school holidays offering sessions from 11am to 1pm, then again from 2pm to 4pm daily, with a bonus skating session on Wednesday from 4pm to 6pm. There is also a Friday night party from 7pm to 10pm so you can roller disco the night away. During the school holidays, skating sessions are $11 plus $2 for skate hire. The Friday evening session is $12 plus $2 skate hire. Full details are available on the sk8House website.
Sk8House is also the perfect party venue for both kids and adults alike. There are both catered and do-it-yourself options or the venue can be fully booked for private functions.
