Opening Night of SIX The Musical at the Comedy Theatre, 240 Exhibition Street, Melbourne was all you'd expect it to be. Australian celebrities were out in full force, walking the purple carpet, having pictures taken against the matching purple media wall - actors, comedians, television hosts, composers, singers, Instagram influencers, they were all there (I recognised them all as they each stepped up to the media wall to be photographed), including staff working on the production. There were a couple of guests who went to the trouble of recreating some of the costumes for their attendance, which was an eye-catching standout.

Divorced Beheaded Died Divorced Beheaded Survived - will stick in your head as the Tudor Queens take their turns belting it out in rhyming sequence that you're unlikely to ever forget who got the chop and who survived. Loren Hunter as Jane Seymour - #3 Died

Making a royal entrance on stage, the Tudor Queens turned Pop Princesses belt out Ex-Wives and introduce themselves in kick ass, high-energy style and command the stage with their individual personalities and vocals. These six wives of Henry VIII will perform for 75 minutes straight with no interval and make retelling their story a competition amongst themselves, about who suffered the most. Supported by snappy, sharp choreography that doesn't miss a beat, the Queens are a joy to behold in their amazing reimagined costumes.

The sound didn't disappoint in clarity and balance as it needed to be clean for the audience to hear tales told in song by the Tudor Queens. Lighting was just as amazing, drawing from a palette of great colour schemes, dipping into those contrasting secondary purples and primary reds and bright golden yellows. It gave the choreography impact, shaped the environment and gave visual direction, making it a very satisfying watch/visual effect for the audience.

Kiana Daniele as Anna of Cleves - #4 Divorced

If you'd like to arm yourself with a little knowledge about Henry VIII and his six wives you could, but it's not really necessary to enjoy the show. However, grab yourself a program as it's armed with information about the inspiration for the show and more, and a good memento to have. The Queenspiration has been drawn from Queens of this era - Beyoncé, Shakira, Lily Allen, Avril Lavigne, Adele, Sia, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys and Emeli Sande no less.

Beholding great vocal abilities themselves in various styles, the pop princesses will make their stories clear in song, with a touch of witticism that'll put a chuckle on your lips as they belt out No Way, Don't Lose Ur Head, Heart of Stone, Haus of Holbein, Get Down, All You Wanna Do, I Don't Need Your Love, SIX and MegaSIX. In typical girl band style, the Queens will rope you in with their sass and mesmerising dance moves, that by the end of the night you'll be up on your feet, moving involuntarily to the beat, wishing you were up on stage showing off your moves; oh wait, perhaps that's just me. See here to listen to the Studio Cast Recording which has had over 450 million streams worldwide. It's now available to stream/download on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music and all other good music services.

Chelsea Dawson as Katherine Howard - #5 Beheaded

On Opening Night Shannen Alyce Quan played Catherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII's wives. On stage, an all-girl live band costumed to match punk rock style with just as much sass impressed the audience with their abilities. There was Claire Healy (Music Director) on Keys, Kathryn Stammers on Drums, newest Lady in Waiting Ann Metry rocking out on the Bass, and Debbie Yap on Guitar.

SIX is a feel-good, unadulterated joyful production to experience. It's pure entertainment at its best. It's intelligent and layered with an amazing score, performances and atmosphere and definitely not one to be missed. The talented cast deserves all the applause you can bestow upon them.

Supporting the Arts has never been easier now that individuals can claim up to $125 in combined rebates across the Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program. Before submitting a claim, ticket holders should check the website to see if funds are available. Find more details here.

Your Comment
Sounds amazing! So no Henry makes an appearance, right? I love the idea of the wives getting all the spotlight, instead of the famous king.
