What New Players Should Enter The Race?

Mario Kart is a popular go-kart video game racing series developed and published by Nintendo. The series launched in 1992 with Super Mario Kart, a spin-off of their Super Mario series. The series has had fourteen entries since then, ranging from console games, to arcade games, to mobile games. The Mario Kart series is one of Nintendo's most successful and popular franchises. It has received critical acclaim from critics for its multiplayer experience and diverse gameplay and game modes. It holds several Guinness World Records, including "First Console Kart Racing Game", "Best Selling Racing Game" and "Longest Running Kart Racing Franchise". It has been ranked number 1 on the list of top 10 console games of all time based on their impact and influence in gaming and in 2019 was included in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The Mario Kart series begun with characters featured mainly from the Super Mario franchise, but in later games started adding characters from other franchises, such as the Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Splatoon and Pac Man. It's been a while since we've had a brand-new Mario Kart game so it got me thinking, what new characters would it be fun to see added to the series? Here are my top 6 picks for characters I would love to see added to the Mario Kart roster:

1. Princess Zelda

Six Characters Who Should Join Mario Kart

Series: The Legend of Zelda
First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo Entertainment System, 1986
Created By: Shigeru Miyamoto

Mario Kart 8 delivered big changes to the Mario Kart series. The eight installment of the Mario Kart franchise was developed initially for the Wii U. A deluxe edition was later ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2017 called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The game features a roster of over 36 playable characters, consisting of 16 default characters from the Super Mario franchise, 14 unlockable characters, and 6 characters available to be purchased via DLC.

The game introduces 14 brand new characters to the franchise: additional Super Mario characters like Baby Rosalina, Pink Gold Peach, Tanooki Mario, Cat Peach and the seven kooplings. In addition, Villager and Isabelle from Animal Crossing were added, the Boy and Girl Inklings from Splatoon and Link from The Legend of Zelda. The addition of characters like Villager, Isabelle, the Inklings and Link from The Legend of Zelda was an exciting development for the Mario Kart franchise.

Link is introduced as a heavyweight character and came with his own Zelda themed course and two motorcycles, ancient tyres and paraglider. The introduction of Link and The Legend of Zelda to the Mario Kart franchise opens up a lot of exciting possibilities. I would love to see Link be joined by Princess Zelda in the next instalment of the series.

Princess Zelda is a major character in The Legend of Zelda who often fights alongside Link to defend the Kingdom of Hyrule with magical Light Arrows. She is a powerful, strong character, who is known for being graceful, kind, serious and willing to sacrifice herself for the Kingdom of Hyrule. Zelda would be a great addition to Mario Kart. It would add another playable female character to the game and she would be great paired alongside Link. I want to see Zelda in a triforce themed car or motorcycle racing through a Hyrule themed track firing Light Arrows at people to knock them off the track and out of her way.

2. Kirby

Series: Kirby
First Appearance: Kirby's Dream Land, Gameboy, 1992
Created By: Masahiro Sakurai

When I started writing this list, I was really surprised to find out that Kirby has never been in a Mario Kart game before. Kirby is the main protagonist of the Kirby video game series and an inhabitant of the planet Popstar. He is a little pink ball with stubby arms and legs who has the ability to inhale other creatures and replicate their powers and abilities. Kirby is a regular playable character in the Super Smash Bros series, but other than that has rarely appeared alongside Mario in any other series. I think Kirby would make a great addition to Mario Kart. He is popular among fans and his unique abilities would translate very well into the game. I could see him being added as a heavy weight-character and driving around in a car or motorcycle shaped like a shooting star. He could inhale other players and temporarily assume their powers and abilities before spitting them back out onto the road again. It would add a whole new element to the game.

3. Midna

Series: The Legend of Zelda
First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Nintendo Gamecube, 2006
Created By: Nintendo

Midna is one of the main protagonists of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Midna is a female Twili from a corrupted parallel dimension known as the Twilight Realm. Midna has two forms, one is an imp-like creature, the other is a humanoid woman. Midna was one of my favourite characters in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. She had a great personality, an ambiguous sense of morality and was a fun companion to join Link on his adventure. Midna would be hilarious in Mario Kart. A delightfully chaotic character, she would be a lot of fun in a race and would add another female player to the roster.

4. Gooigi

Series: Luigi's Mansion
First Appearance: Luigi's Mansion, Nintendo 3DS, 2018
Created By: Grezzo

Gooigi is a clone of Luigi that appears in the Luigi Mansion's games, which are a spinoff of the Super Mario series. Gooigi looks and sounds just like Luigi, but is comprised of green goo. He carries a version of the Poltergust 3000 and Poltergust G-00 made out of goo and was created by Professor E. Gadd. The Mario Kart series already features several clones of characters from Super Mario like Cat Mario, Cat Peach, Pink Gold Peach, Metal Mario, Tanooki Mario and more. I think Gooigi would fit in very well in the franchise and would be a great link to Luigi's mansion. Imagine all the green goo that could explode from Gooigi's engines when he kicks up speed to race toward the finish line!

5. Dixie Kong

Series: Donkey Kong
First Appearance:Donkey Kong Country Two: Diddy Kong's Quest, Super Nintendo, 1995
Created By: Steve Mayles

Dixie Kong was always one of my favourite Donkey Kong characters as a kid. She made her debut in Donkey Kong Country Two: Diddy Kong's Quest. Dixie is a female character who has a blonde ponytail that she can use to whip around her head like a helicopter. She could also use her hair to attack enemies, grab things, and to jump further and faster than Diddy Kong. Dixie was such a fun character. I always preferred to play as her as a kid. She could use her helicopter ability to fall slower and cross large gaps and it was fun scooping up barrels with her ponytail and throwing them at enemies. Dixie has never appeared in a Mario Kart game. Donkey Kong has been a regular playable character in the series since the very first game was released and Diddy Kong has appeared in two games. Mario Kart could definitely benefit with more characters from the Donkey Kong series. Dixie is a nostalgic pick of mine, but I would also like to see Diddy Kong featured more, and other characters like Funky and King K. Rool be added as well.

6. Impa

Six Characters Who Should Join Mario Kart

Series: The Legend of Zelda
First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo Entertainment System, 1986
Created By: Nintendo

Impa is one of my favourite characters in The Legend of Zelda series. Impa is a member of the Sheikah, an ancient religious tribe devoted to protecting the land of Hyrule and its Royal Family, who are descendants of the Goddess Hylia. Impa has been featured in multiple Legend of Zelda games, appearing sometimes as an old wise woman, and other times as a young warrior woman, who is always devoted to protecting Princess Zelda. I think Impa would make a great addition to the Mario Kart series. I think she is one of the most interesting female characters in The Legend of Zelda series. I would love to see Impa appear in the game as a young warrior woman racing alongside Princess Zelda and Link in a car with the symbol of the Sheikah plastered across it.
