Cecilia (aka 'Sissy') is a successful influencer and self-styled "mental health advocate". When she runs into her childhood best friend, Emma, at the chemist, Emma invites her to her hen weekend at a remote house in the bush. Unbeknownst to Sissy, the house is owned by Alex, a bully from her past who has some unfinished business with her.

Sissy is an Australian horror movie written and directed by Kane Senes and Hannah Barlow, who also plays Emma. Aisha Queensland born Aisha Dee stars as Cecilia, and Lucy Barrett (from the reboot of Charmed) is Emma's fiance, Fran.

I ran into another moviegoer in the toilets after seeing this and she asked me "what the Hell did we just watch?!" I thought that was a pretty reasonable response to this movie. It's definitely not for everyone. It's a very dark horror comedy, with a lot of gore (think of the ättestupa scene from Midsommar, or maybe Peter Jackson's Dead Alive), but the overall tone makes those things seem less scary.

Aisha Dee is both hilarious and creepy as the attention hungry, damaged, Celicia. It will be pretty close to home at times if you follow any wellness influencers online, or even just do the odd yoga class. The scenes with the childhood bullying, and the trauma that results from it, might be triggering for some viewers.

Content warning: Bullying, violence, death of an animal, repeated use of a super annoying Sister2Sister song. I am only half kidding about that last one. It's still stuck in my head.

Sissy is a very dark, Aussie horror comedy that is not for the faint of heart. If you like it, you might also enjoy the Kiwi dark comedy Housebound.
