Sirocco is a big place.

Located in the Holiday Inn at the Burswood Complex, it is an enormous room that serves a buffet breakfast (from $21.50) for hotel guests as well as a standalone restaurant for casino players, theatre goers and everyday diners.

We were recommended Sirocco as a good place to go before a show at the Burswood Theatre. With a limited set 'Pre Theatre' menu they did not disappoint with timing. Our mains were on the table within seven minutes, desserts following our dinner within five. They were so quick that we ended up finishing our two course meal within about 30 minutes and having time to look around the ever expanding Burswood Complex before the show began.

The pre-show menu consists of about six starters, six mains and two desserts. Mains ranged from $28 to over $34, so it is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. There was a decent range of proteins including pork belly, fish, beef, and chicken. My chicken dish consisted of two skewers of chicken breast, liberally covered in a very salty jus, a tightly packed mound of 'apricot cous cous', and a cherry tomato salad. The promised chutney was nowhere to be seen. A pile of rocket added a simple but fresh dimension. I had chosen the chicken because I was looking for something simple, bland even. I could barely eat anything on the plate except the cous cous, because the jus permeated everything else. I don't know if it was over reduced or someone was too heavy handed with the salt, but I found it very difficult to finish.

However, when the waitress came over to see how the meal was going and I explained I found it too salty, her reaction surprised me. First she apologised and offered to take it to the kitchen and have it fixed or replaced. When I said not to worry because we had ordered desserts, she then offered to speak with management and have it removed from our bill. I was quite stunned with the level of service. It's probably no more than what we should expect from any establishment (especially one charging high prices) but it seems very uncommon in Perth. I once was presented a pineapple juice from a well-known eatery on Cambridge Street which had small cockroaches frozen into the ice cubes, not once but twice. The entire batch of icecubes must have been contaminated, but did they offer an apology? No. Did they charge me for the drink? You betcha. (Yes, silly us, we actually stayed and finished the meal. But I will NEVER return).

I digress.

The two desserts on the pre-show set menu were below par, and on the whole I was very disappointed with the meal. But I was impressed with the service, and I wonder what the food would be like off their normal al a carte menu , when the chefs take a bit more time and care to prepare the meals, rather than churning patrons out prior to a show.
