A number of people had told me how much they enjoyed the unique winery tour in Margaret River called Sip 'n Cycle , so when my husband and I joined the tour we had high expectations. This tour with a difference, run by Dirty Detours , exceeded our expectations as we rode from vineyard to vineyard sampling world-class wines at the cellar door.

There were a number of elements of this tour that made it particularly enjoyable. We loved meandering along the leafy country laneways, smooth bike trails and quiet rural roads between lush green vineyards. In total, we covered 18 km as we visited 4 diverse wineries, but it was an easy amble for anyone with at least a basic biking ability.

The wineries we visited ranged from an old and established winery with a long rich history, to a newish, innovative and contemporary winery and another that was small and boutiquey.

With only a small number of participants on the tour, we received personal and esteemed service at each of the wineries. We were not only offered the opportunity to sample the winery's regular wines but also sampled their more prestigious and award winning wines.

At each winery the staff enthusiastically shared their rich knowledge and fascinating facts, educating us on the nuances and science of wine making. At the first two wineries. our group listened attentively, absorbing the fascinating facts offered to us but, by the 3rd and 4th winery, after sampling 8-12 different wines at each of the wineries, we were decidedly more interested in socialising and chatting with our new drinking buddies.

At the final winery, we relaxed and enjoyed platters of delicious local produce, including cheeses, meats, olives and marinated vegetables. By this time, with the benefit of fine wines, we were so relaxed, we comfortably enjoyed the company of our fellow riders, who felt more like our new best friends.

The 3/4 of a day tour starts and ends in the town of Margaret River. At the beginning of the day our super friendly guides, Rob and Mike, ensured the safety aspects of riding were covered and their extensive local knowledge enhanced our enjoyment of the day.

There was an opportunity to buy wines along the way and the problem of trying to precariously ride a bike with a backpack of precious bottles was eliminated as the Dirty Detour vehicles swooped along behind us collecting our treasures and bringing them safely back to our finish point for collection.

Prices are from $105/person and can be booked through Dirty Detours here .
