In 1952 MGM released their smash-hit Singin' in the Rain, starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. Decades on the musical has been reprised around the world tugging at the heartstrings of the audience. Opening at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne, the performance was flawless and well received.

Set in Hollywood in 1927, just as the as the talkies arrived on the scene, the musical captures the wonderment and fickleness of the industry. At the time silent movie producers struggled to adapt to the new model and the ever-changing expectations of the public.

Don Lockwood's (Adam Garcia) love interest Kathy Selden (Gretel Scarlett) helps to save the failing talkie by dubbing the sound for Don's co-star Lina Lamont (Erika Heynatz) who sounds like a shrieking fool the moment she opens her mouth. Although perfect for silent movies, Lina Lamont struggles in the new generation of talkies. Heynatz comedic timing gives the musical a dash of whimsy and keeps the audience laughing.

Our leading men Don Lockwood (Adam Garcia) and Cosmo Brown (Jack Chambers) were made for their roles and were the embodiment of perfection. Adam Garcia's breathtaking performance of Singin' in the Rain at the end of Act 1 was faultless as the stage was engulfed with 12,000 litres of live rain, splashing the first few rows. The extraordinary scene is hypnotic to watch and an incredible feat for the set designers.

Chambers is hilarious and his performance of Make Em Laugh won over the audience. Scarlett's angelic voice and presence on stage helps to round out the trio (Garcia/Chambers/Scarlett) and their performance of Good Mornin' demonstrates their incredible chemistry on stage.

The ensemble was spectacular and a special mention goes out to Andrew Wright for his brilliant choreography and Jonathan Church for his impeccable direction. The combined efforts have captured the allure of its silver screen counterpart.

Overall, an enjoyable evening that will leave you filled with nostalgia.
