Home Renovations can often be expensive, but it doesn't always have to be so. There are a few very easy ways to make your home look modern, neat and stylish. Best of all they are all do it yourself projects that don't require much time.
1) Paint it over

Repainting your walls will quickly have your home looking newer. Choose bright colours to make the house look more spacious. If you want to add some colour, simply add a feature wall painted a different colour.

2) It's all in the details

Small details that are often overlooked are actually one of the easiest ways to add modern style to your home.

>Doorknobs: Replace old doorknobs with newer, more modern looking ones. Contemporary lever style door handles will make your home more modern compared to the traditional door knobs.

>Handles: if you have older style handles on cupboards and drawers, you can easily give them a lift by replacing old handles with newer ones. These are extremely easy to replace and usually you only need to remove a screw from the back.
>Curtains: replace old or worn out curtains with something more modern such as roller blinds will make your room look significantly newer. Best of all is that roller blinds are actually much cheaper and easier to install than traditional curtains.
3) Lighting

Another aspect that is often overlooked is the amount of lighting in the house. Open up curtains to let in as much natural light as you can during the day, it will make your house look brighter, more welcoming and more spacious. Dark and closed rooms will look stuffy and smaller.

During the night, it is essential that you choose the right kind of lighting. Energy saving light bulbs come in both cool and warm types, I personally recommend you go for the warm type, as they tend to look brighter, more natural and the light spreads more evenly compared to the cool types. Cool types also have a tendency to give the room a more aged look which we want to avoid, they can also have a depressing effect. Add some lamps to help brighten dark corners or to add some mood lighting.

As with small details I spoke of earlier, light fittings also play an important role in how the room appears. Like the handles, older style light fittings cans also be easily replaced with newer looking ones to make the room look more modern.

4) Less is more

Don't fill the room with unnecessary furniture and excessive decorations, as it will make the room look smaller, cluttered and chaotic. Keep the room clean and simple. Add a few decorative items, but don't overdo it.

Also make sure to stick to a particular design and colour scheme. Aim for about 3-4 colours per room, any more than that will make the room look messy. Make sure all the furniture and items in the room are part that colour scheme and that the colours match well together. A very handy website you can use is colorschemedesigner.com which helps you decide on matching colour schemes you can use.
