Katoomba's Hidden Gem
Take a drive along Cliff Drive, from the Three Sisters end; it's full of amazing lookouts and Silver Mist Reserve is no exception. It's incredible how many new places you can find in the Blue Mts. I have been traveling up here since I was young and only by accident did I find Silver Mist Reserve; a hidden beauty in the wonderful heritage listed Blue Mountains.
Opposite Forster Street, you will find a dirt carpark which is abuzz with people coming and going. Eager to find a new place to explore my child and I follow like sheep. Once in the reserve, take the bottom path. The top section is a grassed area for lunch with a view. The bottom path, takes you down to the two lookouts. What I found interesting was no one seemed to go down the stairs - they all stayed at the top. Taking the lead, my son and I head down the well marked track, to a glorious view towards the Leura and Sublime side of the valley.
Lucky residents get to wake up to this view everyday
We did wonder why it was called Silver Mist; was there a waterfall maybe? No, just a superb view! Due to the colouring on the cliffs and shadows created by the valley, a magical silver mist seemed to engulf the valley in sections until the sun strikes the cliff lines and the valley seems to be blue again - it changes before your eyes. It's so magical! The shadows dance across the cliff, creating different tones and colouring of the rockface and valley below.
To the left is another small lookout (a less than 5 minutes walk) opening the valley from yet another direction and the valley changes again from Blue to Silver in shade. My son was fascinated with the erosion of the rocks along the cliff line and some wildlife was seen. We only saw 2 people in this section of the walk. You can walk to Millamurra Lookout and onto Honeymoon Lookout heading towards Leura or you can return to your car or walk to the right onto Yuruga Lookout, Lady Carrington and Spooners Lookout just before reaching the Three Sisters.
Silver Mist and Tallwalla Lookout was about a 10 minute easy walk. The Leura or Katoomba walk is around 30 minutes to an hour. Due to the amount of shade in the Mts it can get chilly, please always bring a jacket and water and don't forget the camera and binoculars.
