Over the last 7 years, I've visited Margaret River at least once a year, enjoying the delights of this gourmet wine region . In all my times in this part of the world, I've never visited it's silk worm farm , despite its stone's throw location from the Margaret River Chocolate Factory, a haven I've visited more times than I'd like to admit.

However, on our most recent trip, we had a curious 4 year old in tow; and as soon as he heard there were worms in the vicinity, off we detoured to the worm factory, and a delightful time we had in this hidden gem.

What

This worm farm is Australia's first commercial silk farm, and is well established as an educational centre for those interested in learning a little bit more about the process of worm-rearing, to produce those fine silk threads.

The staff are beyond helpful, and go out of their way to talk you through the whole silk making process. We had our two sons with us, and the lovely staff engaged them both, educating them on how the wiggly worm they saw went on to produce silk. Fans of Eric Carle's Hungry Caterpillar will be used to the story of the caterpillar who went on to become a cocoon, and then into a butterfly; the additional of the silk making process wasn't too far off.

There's an educational DVD session too; if you want to know a bit more about the process and the silk industry, then you'll enjoy this great addition to the worm farm experience.

When

You can visit the Silk Worm Farm every day of the year, except for Christmas Day, between 10am - 5pm.

Outside of the main building, you can visit the greenhouse full of mulberry trees, the silk worms favoured food.

Cost

This is a free outing for the family and, whilst a visit around the silk worm farm will likely only take you 30 mins to an hour, there's also great little onsite cafe serving a host of delicious goodies, that can make your visit last a little longer.

This is a great little detour, perfect for taking kids to if you are already in the Margaret River region.
