Silk Hills is a former mining town in Appalachia. It has seen better days, and abounds with legends about the Mothman and other strange creatures. Former marine turned private investigator, Beth Wills, is hired by the mayor to come to the town and find his missing son. She finds herself dealing with an eccentric entomologist, local drug dealers and some very weird looking deer.

Silk Hills is a very peculiar graphic novel, written by Ryan Ferrier (of Rat Queens and Curb Stomp), and illustrated by Brian Level and Kate Sherron. I enjoyed the story, which was slow-building and creepy, with some classic Western elements mixed in with the X-Files vibe.

The art is confusing at times, but it's presumably supposed to be, since various characters have psychedelic dreams and probably don't know what is really going on any more than the reader does. The imagery gets a bit gruesome but is drawn in a slightly cartoonish style that reminded me a bit of Rob Guillory's work in Farmhand and Chew .

Silk Hills is a strange, spooky graphic novel that will probably appeal to people who like tales about cryptids, as well as fans of Twin Peaks and The X-Files.
