A brand new experimental theatre festival
Sidesault at The Melba is a short festival of experimental circus, showcasing emerging and established circus artists in the mirrored splendour of The Melba Spiegeltent.

Held over two provocative weeks, the Festival will present works that challenge and push the contemporary circus artform across a range of disciplines, from sideshow stunts to adrenalin charged acrobatics, and styles and approaches ranging from feminist to freakshow.

Raw and unexpected, this is an opportunity to experience work at the forefront of the circus arts. Generously supported by the City of Yarra, Circus Oz presents the inaugural Sidesault at the Melba festival.

The Festival programme consists of five shows from local and international artists.

    presented by A GOOD CATCH

    8 November - 11 November

Knit is 29, Pearl is 40 and Slip is over 50 (but under 60). Biologically, socially and psychologically, they differ markedly. However, they share circus, a similar collaborative ethic and belief that devised performance requires a democratic process. They find joy in each individual's strengths, they challenge weaknesses while supporting new possibilities. They disagree, but they seek understanding and hopefully they are changed with new knowledge. These factors create the show.

    presented by TUMBLE CIRCUS (Ireland)

    8 November - 11 November

Tumble Circus are excited to announce an extraordinary circus show called Unsuitable, a circus comedy event with confused jugglers, dangerous aerialists, dispirited clowns and broken acrobats. It's about displaced and marginalised people trapped in a world of pain. It will make you gasp, make you laugh, and make you believe that people matter. Unsuitable is a show for everyone.

presented by TIME IN SPACE CIRCUS

    15 November - 18 November

With a driving desire to create, play and grow, five circus artists from Time In Space Circus present 'Nonstop.' This show is spectacular with raw passion and innovative risk.

Audiences are drawn into the performers' world and see the limits and possibilities of the human body both physically and mentally. 'Nonstop' incorporates music that influences the way the acrobats move, think and feel. This show brings a fresh approach to circus by combining art forms of Tricking, Dance, Group Acrobatics and Juggling into an experimental circus show.

    15 November - 18 November

'Party Ghost' is a ghoulish exploration of the postmortem mystery through a comedic pop-cultural lens. Part circus and part seance, 'Party Ghost' is a macabre suite of the grindhouse kind. Made from the limbs of drag queens, the blood of acrobats and the guts of misunderstood clowns, Olivia and Jarred cordially invite you to their wacky Frankenstein monster of a show. You'll laugh, you'll cry. It might just change your afterlife!

    15 November - 18 November

This spring The Syndicate Sideshow bring their renowned brand of political satire, incredible stunts and dark sarcasm to the Melba Spiegeltent for a special one week season of Relax: Everything's Fucked!

Watch in awe as these punk rock daredevils go bigger, better and weirder than ever - challenging the boundaries of decency and common sense with spectacular sideshow stunts, electrifying burlesque, incredible escapes and whip-sharp political satire. More motivational than a workplace poster! As sincere as a politicians apology! Happier than a nihilistic mining tycoon! Brimming with ideas, wit and anarchistic energy this carnival cult-hit promises to have you roaring with laughter as we push your boundaries, tantalise your senses and subvert your expectations!
