Endless pairs of cut-price shoes line the aisles of
Shu-Mart , a footwear clearance centre in Glen Huntly. They stock thousands of men's, ladies' and children's shoes, categorised by size. Well-known brands can be found for a fraction of their regular price in this spacious but generally quiet store.
As soon as you walk in, you will be confronted will the latest discount stock to come in. Sometimes there is nothing noteworthy, at other times, you will find amazing buys. Last time I went there, I was thrilled to snap up the shoes pictured below for $12 a pair.
On previous visits, I have managed to score white boots for $25, floral wedges for $15, and cute kitten heels for $10. After you have perused the bargains at the front of the store, it is worth looking through the mélange of shoes sorted by size. While many of these can best be described as daggy, if you look closely you will find bargain buys from brands such as
Siren ,
RMK ,
Tony Bianco and
Valeria Grossi . In the men's section, brands such as
Windsor Smith ,
Slazenger and
Slatters are available.
Shu-Mart stocks a wide range of styles, including formal and evening shoes, but they specialise in school shoes and sport shoes. Again, many of these come from well-known brands, and they are all ridiculously cheap. You may wonder why their shoes are so heavily discounted, thinking that there must be something wrong with them. While some shoes are factory seconds, many were formerly on display in other stores or are just out of season. Often, they stock quality, on-trend shoes in small sizes only- so if you're a size five or six, Shu-Mart has many a bargain to offer you.
Located on the Glenhuntly Road shopping strip, there are plenty of Indian restaurants and small shops to browse. A few shops down from Shu-Mart is
Studio Fashion , a youthful and cheap clothing store with plenty of brightly coloured, on-trend garments. Just next door is
Darn Cheap Fabrics , which, as the name suggests, specialises in cut-price fabric.
Shu-Mart is just a few minutes' walk from
Glenhuntly Railway Station and a route number
67 tram stop. There is plenty of parking available in the nearby side streets and behind Safeway, which is about five minutes away down Glenhuntly Road.
