I wonder how many people are unaware that Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance is so much more than an architectural monument? Completed in 1934, the Shine serves to remember those who served and sacrificed in times of war. It does this not only through the ceremonies held there, but through commemorative spaces, special exhibitions, and personal stories. It is a museum designed out of respect for those who served. Entry to the Shrine is free, what it has to offer available for all to see, but for a more informative and enriching experience, guided tours are provided throughout the day.

Your guide will share their knowledge about Australian and Victorian war history, and the history of the Shrine itself. Hear about the significance of ANZAC Day to Australia and Australians. The tour is informative and engaging and will only whet your appetite to spend more time. There is so much to see.

In the middle of The Sanctuary, you will see The Stone of Remembrance, a symbolic gravestone for Victorian service men and women buried overseas or in unmarked graves. In the Ambulatory, forty-two bronze caskets house the Books of remembrance in which the names of more than 89,000 Victorians who served. The Galleries of Remembrance house more than 800 artworks, historical objects, interactive multimedia, rare images and films.

In the Gallery of Medals, 4,000 medals are displayed on a forty-metre-long wall. Discover the Father and Son sculpture in the middle of The Crypt, where you will also see the Colours of disbanded Victorian regiments. From the Balcony, you are treated to a sweeping view of Melbourne and of the thirteen-hectare Shrine Reserve where more than 250 memorial trees have been planted.
The exterior of the Shrine is quite a sight. An imposing square structure with a stepped pyramid roof, it has classical porticos and Doric columns. Stone statues adorn the corners, representing Peace, Justice, Patriotism and Sacrifice. The Shrine sits on a podium and is approached on wide flights of steps that rise in stages, a sight in themselves.
