The Galleries of Remembrance are a new feature of the Shrine of Remembrance that has only been open since Remembrance Day in 2015. They are the result of a $45 million redevelopment of the area beneath the shrine, including excavating 1,600 square metres around the Crypt.

The galleries consist of a large underground exhibition space that houses both permanent and temporary exhibits. On display amongst the brick pillars is information and historical items from Pre-Federation all the way to the present day, focusing on the smaller stories of individual Victorians and regiments.

I was lucky enough to do a free tour of the space during the 2016 January school holidays and had some of the highlights pointed out to me. These include one of the boats used at the landing at Galipolli, the Changi flag and more.

There is so, so much to see here; over 800 items in total actually, such as uniforms worn by soldiers, souvenirs they brought home, family memorabilia and artwork. As a whole, the galleries offer a fascinating depiction of may different sides to the wars that Australia has been part of, as well as its peacekeeping efforts.

Within the Galleries of Remembrance you will also find one of the most sacred areas of the Shrine; the Crypt, which is a memorial to the units of the 1st Australian Imperial Force and the Royal Australian Navy. Upstairs is the Sanctuary and the Stone of Remembrance, while outside are memorials, the Eternal Flame, and many more things to see.

The galleries are open from 10.00am to 5.00pm daily, with last entry at 4.30pm. They are closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Admission is free.
