Roll up, roll up - it's showtime at Art from the Margins

'Showtime' celebrates the comparative works of Sylvian Minier and Art from the Margins' (AFTM) own Foto Group. Inspired by the Ekka, both bodies of work show very different sides of this annual event. In one, a utopia of bright colours and festivities of years past, in the other an eerily bleak and empty RNA Showgrounds resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak.

Due to the current global pandemic, the Ekka and many regional shows around the country have been cancelled for 2020. AFTM Project Officer Zoe Blandford has curated this evocative exhibition, as restrictions ease, to bring joy, while also exploring the current
historical moment.

Only twice before has the Ekka been cancelled; in 1919 due to the Spanish Flu epidemic, and in 1942 due to WWII. As an arts organisation, close to the Brisbane Showgrounds in Fortitude Valley, AFTM wanted to capture the mixed emotions of the Brisbane and greater Queensland community to the effects of the pandemic on much-loved country shows "These comparative works don't just embody the explicit meaning of "No Ekka", but are a look into how the Brisbane community is feeling as a whole. From fun and laughter to bleak and empty, 2020 has hit everyone's yearly routine with uncertainty but also hope and anticipation", Stephanie Lindquist, AFTM's General Manager said.

The AFTM Foto Group is a collective of artists with adversity and disabilities who meet weekly at AFTM Gallery & Studios under the guidance and mentoring of professional facilitator, Peter McGhie, to improve their creative skills and collaborate on projects. Their documentation of the Ekka grounds was supported by the RNA and Brisbane Showgrounds who generously provided access to their site.

Presented alongside the works of professional photographer Sylvain Minier, who himself has a vision impairment, the exhibition reminds us the show will indeed come back to town, and we will come together again.

Incorporating photo media, projections and building activations, 'Showtime' runs from Saturday 25 July Friday 18 September 2020 and can be visited at AFTM Gallery & Studios, 136 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley. Art works are also available for viewing and purchase online at https://artfromthemargins.myshopify.com

Please join the artists for the official opening on Saturday 25 July from 4 - 6pm. Register for the event to RSVP at www.eventbrite.com/e/showtime-exhibition-opening-tickets-110237932624 (numbers are strictly limited).
