Paddington is getting all shouk up, Middle Eastern style

1. The menu

Food has to be seen (and tasted) to be believed. The goat's milk and date panna cotta with seasonal fruit, kataifi pastry and pistachios, for example, is a work of art. To complement its creative breakfast delights, the café offers a range of lunch menu options, all with delectable flavour combinations, such as honey roasted chicken, artichoke and fennel salad.

Specials such as seared scallops with almond crumbs and tomato salad, and eggplant topped with tahini sauce and pomegranate are equally impressive. As are the drinks such as limonana, a blend of lemonade, mint, sugar syrup and ice, which tastes are fresh as it looks.

And items are all competitively priced.

2. The décor

In keeping with the building's quaint and unassuming façade, décor is not overwhelming, instead offering exotic glimpses in the nooks and crannies, particularly its coffee enclave.

Most memorably, the bar area features a magnificent mosaic tiles tiled backdrop to transport you to the Middle Eastern marketplace from where the café gets its name.

3. The location

Tables in the rear section of the café afford some relaxing views towards the D'Aguilar Range, impressively so given that the café is situated just one street off Paddington's busy Latrobe Terrace.

4. The service

Service is welcoming and modest. These are people proud of their place and they show genuine happiness in sharing it with diners.

5. The free stuff

Shouk Café's hilltop Paddington location means that there is plenty of free parking in the surrounding streets. Plus there is free wifi.
