The Shot Tower museum is located within the iconic Coop's Shot Tower, which is also home to the R.M Williams Mens wear shop. Both of them are right in the middle of Melbourne Central Shopping centre. Despite the popularity of the Shot Tower (it is the most-photographed building in Melbourne), most people don't know about the existence of the Shot Tower Museum and walk straight past it.
The museum, although small, tells the story of shot making (ammunition) as well as the history of the tower itself from its beginnings in 1889, when it was built, to today. It is now heritage listed because not only is it an excellent example of the the industrial age, but it is also one of only three 19th century shot towers in Australia. And thanks to the 84 metre high glass cone surrounding it, which was designed by renowned Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, it is in the best condition of all three of the towers.
