Theatre & cabaret festival that features 10 min performances
The Short & Sweet Theatre & Cabaret Festival has one simple rule, each act must only be 10 minutes long. The festival features local talent performing original short plays and musical numbers. What you get is one of the most innovative and energetic theatre events of the year in both Brisbane and The Gold Coast.

The festival is divided into two streams, theatre and cabaret. The theatre stream has been running longer, features more acts and is on more days. The cabaret stream is a newer addition to the festival and has been building up in the level of talent, number of acts and popularity.

The way it works is this. Various groups put on a 10 minute performance. These can vary a lot between improvisation, sketch comedy, dramatic pieces and spoken word performances. When I attended there was even one group that put on an interactive performance where the audience chooses the path for the story. The cabaret stream usually features a combination of songs, drama and spoken word. You, the audience, get to vote on which acts you most like and the winners go on to the final.

At the Brisbane Powerhouse, the show runs for two weeks with 2 different sets of performers on for each week. So if you go in the first week, you can return the second week to enjoy completely different acts. Thursday night and Saturday during the day is theatre only while on Friday and Saturday nights there is theatre and cabaret. Tickets for each session sold separately.

After the Brisbane performances there will be another sets of performances at the Gold Coast Arts Centre in Surfers Paradise. If you enjoyed the Brisbane Performances you can easily pop down to the Gold Coast for more Theatre and Cabaret.

The Grand Final will feature the best acts from both Brisbane and The Gold Coast and will be on Friday night August 26 in a Gala performance.

Overall this is a great value for money night out. The theatre performances can be funny, moving, innovative, intriguing and exciting. 10 minutes means that they have to focus on creating a great performance. The cabaret is not as interesting, but there are still some worthwhile performances that make it worth checking out. Expect the cabaret to improve over time.

Tip: While you can buy discounted theatre & cabaret combination tickets, if you go to the theatre performance, they usually provide discounts for the later cabaret if there are tickets still available.
