Short Black Panther is the newest caffeine hub in Mortdale, a suburb in Southern Sydney. Run by Danielle Sheriff (ex-barista of Palomino Espresso in Sydney's CBD), it offers amazing coffee and a wide range of ever-changing baked goods including fresh muffins, cakes, brownies and gluten-free options too.
Great attention to detail has been paid to the decor of the cafe, with simple and kitschy decoration like pumpkins, children's book bunting and paper-cut moose heads!
The coffee is an absolute winner, with their house blend of 5 Senses Crompton Road and a rotating guest blend, as well as single-origin filter coffee. I had two macchiatos (one house blend, one Single Origin Roaster's guest blend). Both were absolutely perfect - beautifully extracted and the correct temperature. A cappuccino made with the house blend was made well, with the milk frothed well and at a good temperature. Bags of coffee beans are for sale for home coffee enthusiasts.
The menu, (cutely camouflaged in old children's book covers) features simple breakfast options such as avocado on toast, bacon and egg rolls, as well as more substantial options for lunch including sandwiches and salads.
A bacon and egg roll with homemade garlic aioli ($10) and a pumpkin and feta salad ($10) were ordered on this occasion. The bacon and egg roll was simple and tasty, though a bit on the small size. The salad was nothing standout, though the freshness of the ingredients was commendable.
Unable to leave without something sweet, I took home a slice of the gluten-free carrot cake ($5). The tangy and smooth cream cheese icing was more-ish, and the cake was studded with sultanas and walnuts.

Overall, Short Black Panther is a coffee-lovers' oasis in Mortdale. It is definitely worth checking out if you're around the area.
