Short&Sweet. A festival where eleven ten minute plays from local and international artists are tackled by talented local actors and directors. Brisbane based independent theatre companies also present their own work – the best of which will be performed in the finals night where the winner of the festival will be announced

The plays range from a comedy about OCD and sock puppets to dramas exploring topics such as domestic violence and denial. Round One includes some truly fascinating work, a few groaners but overall, a great night of well produced theatre. I had a few favourites:

The Atheist (written by Lizzy King and produced by Somerset Mills Productions) is a tongue-in-cheek comedy that tickles the idea of what would happen if God stopped believing in himself. John Da Conceicao plays a sarcastic and witty God to Joseph Sherlock's scared and sweaty physiatrist in a hilarious exploration of religion, life and death.

Had you ever noticed that the initials for Valentine's Day are the same as Venereal Disease? Pete Malicki certainly has in his play, V.D. (directed by Amy Wollstein). In this hilarious one-woman-show, Kaitlyn Rogers plays a girl who has been left lonely on Valentine's Day for too many years. So when a bunch of flowers is left for her at work she has every reason to be suspicious. This comedy will leave you in stitches.

Falling (written by Angie Farrow and directed by Andrei Romaniuk) tells the tale of Holly Bickford Beaumont, a girl who suffers from the endless sensation of falling. This piece is a beautiful, fast-paced example of well written contemporary theatre. The script is almost poetic and the actors fly around the stage as if they were marionettes. A truly stunning performance.

Founded by Sydney playwright Alex Broun, Short&Sweet has been running for over a decade all around Australia. There is always something for everyone and if you come across a play that doesn't spark your interest, the bright side is that it will be over in less than ten minutes. This festival is an event not to be missed.
